Sarah Adwoa Safo, has pointed to the lack of ministerial reshuffles under President Nana Akufo-Addo as a major factor in the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) declining popularity.
Former Minister for Gender and Social Protection admitted that the government’s failure to make strategic changes in leadership over eight years fueled public dissatisfaction and apathy within the party.
“There was no reshuffle during the eight years. Government even sacked some persons, and that also affected our base. The last-minute sacking by the president was very useless, and that brought about the apathy,” she stated in an interview on Asempa FM.
Her remarks highlight a long-standing concern among political analysts and party insiders who have criticized the government’s reluctance to inject fresh energy into governance by replacing underperforming ministers. While reshuffles are common practice in many administrations to maintain efficiency and responsiveness, the NPP maintained a largely unchanged cabinet throughout its tenure.
The former minister’s admission adds to the growing debate about whether the party’s leadership structure contributed to its struggles in the recent election. Some party loyalists believe that timely reshuffles could have mitigated internal grievances and improved public perception.
Adwoa Safo, however, remains optimistic about the party’s future, urging members to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their candidate in the next election.
